Wolkswagen Golf 2016 hatchback complete review
This car could be classified as the best family hatchback of all Volkswagens, because it offers everything that families will ever need. It fulfils the family brief on space, low emissions, comfort, sturdy quality and powerful performance. This seventh generation car is one of the best in its class.
Running costs and emissions
The fuel-efficient turbocharged engine mean this car should cost surprisingly little to run, especially compared to previous Volkswagen cars. The Volkswagen Golf BlueMotion models offer a very low fuel consumption. The 1.6 litre diesel TDi delivers very low CO2 emissions, at just 89g/kg and a fuel consumption of 83.1mpg. For those families who are interested in even lower CO2 emissions, the all electric e-Gold and hybrid GTE models fulfil a low CO2 emissions criteria.
It’s not a cheap car to buy, however because of the quality and durability of the car, the retail price and resale value is guaranteed to remain high throughout the life of the Volkswagen Golf.
Engine and performance
The latest generation is more comfortable to drive than its predecessor, because of Volkswagen’s latest MQB platform which offers safer handling and a higher level of comfort. Overall this car offers a smooth ride as with all Volkwagen cars, and comfort is one of its most attractive selling points.
There are a very wide range of engines to choose from. The petrol engine starts from as low as 1.0 litre, the entry level in terms of price is 1.2 litre petrol, but the best engine is the 1.4 litre petrol (available in both 123bhp and 148bhp versions). There is also a Golf with a 2.0 litre engine available. As with regards to the TDi diesels, there is a range from 1.6 TDi to 2.0 TDi. There are also the eco hybrid versions available.
The overall exterior design of the car may be classic Volkswagen style, but is understated compared to its rivals. The rivals of the VW Golf, Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series have more luxurious and plusher interiors.
It is available as a 5 door hatchback but a 3 door model of the VW Golf is also available. There are in fact six trim levels to choose from when purchasing this car. Entry level S offers technology such as Bluetooth phone connexion, air conditioning and a DAB radio. The next model up, Match model, offers cruise control and alloy wheels.
